Aloha Air Cargo is the airline we go through to ship rats to other islands. We are dependent on their flight schedule so shipment dates will vary and are often rescheduled due to maintenance or weather. Therefore, we will need some flexibility for rat arrival times/dates.
Price: Airline cost can vary slightly but is generally around $65 per shipping container. A container can hold several same gender rats. For the time and transport of the rats to ag inspection and the airline there will be an additional $15 for the total shipping and handling price of $80.
Rats can ship out once they are 8 weeks old. They are shipped in containers originally designed for shipping lab rats. They are rodent proof, chew proof, and well ventilated. They will be shipped with some items from their cage to have a familiar scent to prevent stress. They will also have some bedding to keep them comfortable. Frozen fruits will be available to them for hydration. And dried lavendar/chamomile flowers will be sprinkeled in the carrier as another way to promote calming for them.
Before flying they will be taken to the Plant Quarantine station in Honolulu to be checked over by the Ag Inspectors and then taken directly to the airport to ship out.
1. Rats are social animals that require same species companionship. Studies show that rats do best in groups of 4 or more but a pair of rats will do just fine as well. Rats do develop strong bonds with other rats but this will not affect their bond with their human friends and likely will allow them to have even stronger bonds with their people due to the confidence boost that other rats will give them. We do recommend that rats have rat companions of similar age so that they have a playmate that matches their energy level while they are young.
2. Adopters must show proof that they have a rat appropriate cage. Minimum cage dimensions of the floor of the cage must be at least 22" wide x 36" long. Bar spacing cannot exede 1/2". Bars should be horizontal instead of vertical so the rats can easily climb. And the cage bottom must be solid instead of wire to prevent bumble foot. See the Cage Selection page for more info on cage selection and links to pre-approved cages to purchase.
3. Rats are sold on Not For Breeding contracts only at this time. Although we fully support other reputable rat breeders in the state, we are still developing our lines. Breeding animals ethically involves careful selection, knowledge of lineage, understanding of genetics, and a responsibility to ensure any animal produced does not land in a bad situation. Please respect our decision to not place our rats in breeding homes at this time.
