Ethical Breeders of Fancy Rats in the state of Hawaii are few. However the few reputable breeders here are dedicated to producing healthy rats with great temperaments and we all support eachother completely! Unfortunately, there are a few unethical "breeders" in the state that have acquired rats on Not For Breeding contracts and then intentionally used them to produce litters.
What Makes A Breeder Ethical?
- They research their lines to understand what genetics, temperament, and health they may produce.
- They will always take any rat they produced back if at any point the rat(s) need to be rehomed for any reason.
- They vet potential adopters to ensure potential homes understand what care rats need.
- They require adopters to purchase a rat safe and appropriate cage before sending any rats home.
- They educate adopters on proper rat care and stay up to date on current rat care and welfare practices to share with their adopters.
- They understand that rats are social animals that require same species companionship and do not adopt rats out as single pets.
- They evaluate temperaments of each rat in the litter produced before placing them in homes.
- They provide the rats in their program enriching lives in appropriate cages with proper nutrition, sanitation, and care.
- They breed with specific goals in mind and carefully select their breeding pairs.
- They never send babies home earlier than 8 weeks of age. And ensure those babies are healthy and free from injuries or disease before placing them in homes.
